Welcome back to the return of East Coast Wine News. In the past year since I ran my last roundup, the national recognition of wines from the East Coast has increased. It's time to start pulling all the news articles and blog posts about this recognition together on a regular basis. So each Monday, I'll be doing just that.

I'm going to start with one of my own pieces - and once in a while I will throw one in - and then move on to other writers and publications that are taking a look at what's happening in wine on this side of the country.

  • I was thrilled to write VinePair's first New Jersey-focused piece, With Critically Lauded Bottles, New Jersey Wine is Coming Into Its Own. It's an overview of what's happening up and down the state, plus a list of five bottles that can be ordered online - or bought in the tasting rooms if you're able to get to them.

  • Over at PennLive, Paul Vigna talks about the opportunity to try NJ's Unionville Vineyards' Counoise, a red Rhone grape. Only 16 cases were produced, and very few wineries in the country bottle it as a single varietal.

  • The Maryland wine industry is growing as consumers focus on the local according to Baltimore Business Journal's Amanda Yeager. Consumers aren't just looking for local; they're looking for quality local.

  • Nancy Irelan, the co-owner and winemaker at Red Tail Ridge Winery on Seneca Lake, was named a semifinalist in the wine, spirits and beer producer category in the 2019 James Beard awards, reports Don Cazentre in New York Upstate. (Another East Coast producer, Deirdre Heekin of La Garagista Winery in Bethel, VT was also named.)

  • The Washington Post's Dave McIntyre tell how A white wine beats the reds in a competition to name Virginia’s best. The 2016 petit manning from Horton Vineyards beat out 500 wines from more than 100 wineries to take home the state's Governor’s Cup award.

  • The Cork Report's Mikhail Lipyanskiy is doing a series of Tasting Reports From the Finger Lakes. In part 3, he looks at wines from Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyard and Standing Stone Vineyards.
