Hybrid grapes are gaining respect says Elin McCoy on Bloomberg. She interviews none other than France's best sommelier, Pascaline Lepeltier, who says “Thanks to a new generation of hybrids and new producers growing for quality, not quantity, tastes are changing.” There are plenty of East Coast wineries making wines from hybrids, including Hudson-Chatham winery in Hudson Valley, NY. Owner and winemaker Carlo DeVito, who is also quoted in the piece.

(During Philly Wine Week, he'll be at Martha in the Kensington neighborhood sampling his wines, and I have the date on my calendar because these wines have been on my list for about a year now to try.)
Loudon County, Virginia has a new winery. Walsh Family Wine opened this past weekend, and Trevor Baratko of Loudon Times has the story of the winery's start up and its full lineup of Loudoun-grown wines.
The Finger Lakes is getting $68.9 million to build a grape-genetics research lab near Cornell University's Geneva Campus from the federal government. Lynn Alley says on Wine Spectator says the lab's "mission is to employ cutting edge genomic tools to aid traditional grapevine breeding, helping create better vines for vintners."
